Description

Deanston Virgin Oak is a no-age-statement Highland single malt from Deanston Distillery in Doune, Perthshire — built around American virgin (new) oak maturation that produces the most intense vanilla, caramel, and fresh wood character available in the Deanston range, without the secondary sherry or wine cask finishing of other expressions.

Virgin oak barrels (never previously used) deliver the maximum intensity of American oak character — extracting more vanilla, caramel, and wood sugars than bourbon casks that have been partially depleted by a previous fill. The Deanston Virgin Oak uses this intense wood contact to produce a bold, sweet, and accessible single malt at 46.3% ABV without chill filtration. Browse all Scotch whisky at Wooden Cork.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is virgin oak and why does it produce more vanilla character?

Virgin oak (also called new oak) has never held spirit before. The full complement of vanilla-producing compounds (vanillin), caramel, and wood sugars are intact — unlike ex-bourbon casks that have already given up a proportion of these compounds to the bourbon they previously held. Virgin oak produces more intense wood character more quickly.

Is Deanston Virgin Oak heavily oaked?

Yes — the virgin oak maturation produces a noticeably bold, vanilla-forward, and caramel-rich character. Drinkers who prefer light or subtle oak influence may find it intense; those who enjoy the vanilla and caramel profile of American whiskey-style wood tend to respond positively.
